3 Reasons I Got Rid of All My Clothes
I used to have a lot of clothes. I mean A LOT... In fact, I had a lot of stuff in general. But over the last 3 years I've become fascinated with the minimalist lifestyle, and deeply passionate about adding more value to my life by owning less stuff.
Here are The 3 Reasons I Got Rid of Nearly All of My Clothes:
# 3 - SUCCESS LEAVES CLUES
I came across an article a few years back that talked about how many of the most successful people in the world wear a uniform. Influential designers, artists, and entrepreneurs like; Karl Lagerfeld, Michael Kors, Steve Jobs, & Mark Zuckerberg all had a signature style of one core outfit.
The theory behind the uniform and / or having a minimal wardrobe is that by eliminate this one daily decision, both our productivity and creativity is enhanced because we aren't taking up all that extra mental bandwidth by trying to decide what to wear every morning.
I figured hey, if it works for these guys, there MUST be something to it!
# 2 - FREEDOM
Even though I was a total hoarder, I always longed for a simple, minimal wardrobe that I could effortlessly fit into 1 piece of luggage. I envisioned myself as a chic traveler and envied Audrey Hepburn's way of turning one black dress into a dozen different outfits.
After my house caught fire in 2009 my roommate and I went on a minimal shopping spree to replace the clothes we lost and I finally had my taste for the small minimal wardrobe I'd been craving. And I felt lighter and more free then I aver had before.
But it didn't last long. I started accumulating cheap fashion again and it was't until 2015 when Marie Kondo's bestselling book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up entered my life. And that's when everything changed for good. That key question, "Does this spark joy?" had me excited about committing to a capsule wardrobe lifestyle.
# 1 - LESS STRESS, MORE JOY
Is there anything worse then looking into the abyss of a packed closet and feeling like you have nothing to wear? So many hours of my life wasted on trying to decide what to wear when I pretty much just wore the same few outfits over and over again anyway.
My closet was filled with "One Day Items.' You know what I'm talking about. "One day I'll wear this if I ever _____.' But year after year, those "One Days' never came. So why was I holding on to them?
I used to feel my body Contract when I'd open my closet and see nearly 100 item I never wore. A sense of guilt would take over me as I'd energetically feel the cost of all that fabric and the weight, though it lived in my closet, stuck with me where ever i went.
But today I feel much different. Today when I open my closet doors I feel Expansive. Like my body and soul cheers with excitement knowing that choosing what to wear on any given day will take me less then 30 seconds. Everything fits and everything goes together.
Detoxing my wardrobe is one of the best things I've ever done. If I wouldn't buy it today, it's gone. If it doesn't fit right, itches, or is uncomfortable, it's gone. Even if it was expensive, and I never wore it, you got it. It's gone. Clothes hold energy. And if that energy isn't positive, if those items don't spark joy, get them out of your closet, drawers, and energetic field NOW.
